The advances of pest management

It has occurred to me on more than one occasion that some in the public do not perceive those of us in pest management in the greatest of light. Since 1965 a lot has changed in our industry and I would like to help you see some of those changes.

Not my grandpas pest control service.....

A whole lot has changed since my family started in the pest management industry some 40 years ago.  Back then it was common to treat houses and businesses with products that had a half life of 50 plus years. That means the stuff did not go anywhere...  That was fine if you were treating a home for termites but not so much if you had a flea problem and the floors had to be treated. Your pet and kid were then possibly exposed to the active ingredient when they touched the floor. The same could be said about treating the cabinets for a German cockroach problem and if you were experiencing a bed bug problem you ran the risk of contacting the active when you touched your mattress.

Fast Foreword to 2012

The pest control industry today is totally different from what it was in my grandpa's day.  Long gone are DDT and chlordane, products that helped start the pest control industry by giving great control and a long residual. However, the more these products were used the more we created resistance within certain insect populations. Those old products have now been replaced by newer ones that for example can target only a specific pest, products that are not persistent very long in the environment and we even have products that target insect specific nervous system.

All these new products give us a great arsenal to target many different problems and limit our chance of creating insect resistance.

Another huge advancement in the pest control industry is the use of IPM or Insect Pest Management. With IPM we always know the target pest we are after by using different monitoring techniques.  Also, by using IPM we can set population thresholds and make any insecticide applications accordingly.
